Doing kind things for others isn’t about expecting recognition or a reward. A person should simply practice kindness because it’s the right thing to do.

But while many of us perform good deeds without looking for a pat on the back – sometimes people do take notice. In the story below, it was actually captured on camera.

15-year-old Dontarius Caldwell, from Cincinnati, was oblivious to the fact that there were silent eyes watching his every move as he crossed the street one day in February.

It all started when he was waiting for the school bus with his younger sister Diamond.

It was just a regular day. Dontarius was busy playing video games on his phone while his sister was beside him, also busy with her smartphone. They were simply waiting for the bus when Diamond noticed something.

“Diamond was listening to music, then she looked over and I looked over to see what she was looking at,” Dontarius recalled.

Apparently, Diamond spotted a woman who seemed to be having a hard time pressing the button for the crosswalk sign. This prompted her to urge her brother to go and help the woman.

“I told Dontarius that I think she blind, you should get up and go help her, and he got up and went to go help her cross the street two times while I waited for the bus to come,” Diamond shared with WLWT 5.

Dontarius did what he thought was the right thing to do. He stood up and walked to the blind woman and offered some help.

“I said, ‘Ma’am do you need some help?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ She gave me her hand and I held it,” Dontarius said.

He proceeded with assisting the woman as both of them crossed the street. Then, they crossed a second street. After helping her out, Dontarius continued his day and thought nothing special about the event.

Unbeknownst to the young man, everything he did for the woman in need was caught on camera. A motorist named Mike Garibay saw the touching moment and couldn’t help but snap a photo.

The photo of him as he guided the woman was posted online and it inspired a lot of people. In fact, the story even made headlines.

Dontarius’ sincerity and helpfulness shone through and everyone truly appreciated that he did an act of kindness even when there was no one looking…or at least he thought that way.

When asked about why he decided to help, this Aiken High School freshman only replied:

“I was just helping the elderly, giving a helping hand. The keyword is helping hand. Everybody gotta get a helping hand.”

For young Dontarius, what he did was not special at all. He simply did what was the right thing to do.

“If you be kind, what happens (to them) happens to you.”

Dontarius’ act of kindness may have been small – but to the woman, it made a big difference. This story is a reminder that we should be helping others when we can.
