I wasn't expecting it to be so warm and cozy, but mostly so touching.

Emma lives in the woods of Wales. Literally.

This lady lives in an earthen home, completely free of modern cares. She chose to live with mother nature.

It only cost Emma £1000. There’s no electricity, internet, running water, or any of those modern necessities we all need to survive. But for this woman of the woods, she is living the life. A relationship with nature? You bet.

Bryce Langston of Living big in a tiny house got to meet Emma.

If you’ve seen The Lord of the Rings films, then Emma’s little home will remind you of The Shire. She is free from all the pressures of daily living. No debts, no rent, no credit cards, and no irritating neighbors to worry about.

Emma actually owns the land. Her desire to live free won so here she is. She’s got chickens and goats so eggs and milk are right outside her door. Emma cooks on an open fire and there is running water just outside her home. And yes, it’s potable.

Winters are a struggle.

Emma is one tough lady though. It may be cold but she will chop her own wood and fetch water as needed. Don’t let her elderly image fool you. She’s incredible!

The house was a result of 20 years of trial and error. The roof is made from straw-bales and sits on the walls.. Emma makes the plaster from horse manure and clay. Very earthy.

The hut is 4 meters wide and is surprisingly cozy during the winter.

The roof is alive.

Green everywhere! Plants grow on it and you wouldn’t be able to see the house from a distance. It blends beautifully with the surroundings and goes really well with Emma’s whole living with nature theme.

Check out what’s inside.

The windows are huge! Like Bryce says, it connects to the outdoors. Emma likes natural lighting hence the absence of curtains. The ceiling structure is a work of art. Each rafter sits on another one, which Emma says, stands for equality. There’s a fireplace too. Another place to cook for Emma.

Would you like some tea?

All she needs is wood. Emma doesn’t need to pay for electricity. Which one takes longer and which is more efficient? Emma is a smart woman. Natural fire works just fine.

Emma prefers to sit or squat on the floor when she cooks. No furniture, no cabinets or cupboards here. Everything is on the wall and open for easy access. Plus, the rounded shape of the house gives it that spacious feel.

And what about personal hygiene?

There’s a stream of water where Emma gathers what she needs. There’s also a small river for when she wants to swim. Emma has a sauna and a bath which can be heated with fire, as well as a composting toilet. It comes with a great view!

Emma is free from having to charge devices, complicated plumbing, and all the maintenance needed for a normal house.

Emma took a step back and decided to enjoy life as it was meant to be. She is carefree, able to breathe and live as she wants while being with nature. This would be near impossible for most of us. But to Emma, this is life. And it’s awesome.
